Department of General Surgery
The Department of General Surgery at Swami Dayanand Hospital is a vital clinical department providing comprehensive surgical care to patients from Dilshad Garden, Shahdara, and surrounding areas of East Delhi and western UP. As a major government hospital, the department plays a key role in managing both elective and emergency surgical cases, catering to a large and diverse patient population.
The department is supported by adequate hospital infrastructure including dedicated surgical wards, well-equipped operation theatres, and emergency services. The hospital functions round-the-clock with availability of emergency surgical care and post-operative monitoring facilities. There has been recent upgradation of minor ot in OPD to main ot , which has enabled the hospital to carry major cases like laparoscopic cholecystectomies and proctology procedures for haemorrhoids, fistula in ano, fissures , biopsies etc. As a result department has managed successfully to shorten the waiting time for elective laparoscopic cholecystectomies to less than 2 mnths from 1 year bringing much needed relief to patients .Also there has been commencement of laser proctology procedures from July , 2025, first in this area of Delhi, as this facility is not available yet in nearby major or smaller hospitals. Continuous upgradation of operating theatres has contributed to improved patient care and reduced waiting time.
The Department of General Surgery provides a wide range of services including general and abdominal surgeries, basic and advanced laparoscopic procedures like cholecystecomies, simple and abdominal hernia repairs,etc, emergency and trauma surgeries, pre-operative evaluation, post-operative care, and surgical management of common gastrointestinal, anorectal and soft tissue conditions.

The department is staffed by qualified and experienced general surgeons who provide clinical services, supervise surgical care, and ensure safe operative and post-operative management of patients. Specific faculty details can be obtained from hospital administration.

- Rectal Clinic: 9 AM To 1 PM Every Tuesday
- Breast Clinic: Daily 9 AM To 1 PM
- Oncosurgery Clinic: 9 AM To 1 PM

General Surgery OPD services are provided on regular working days, primarily during morning hours.
- Wednesday OT: 9 To 5 PM
- Friday OT: 9 To 5 PM
- Monday OT (OPD Complex): 9 To 4 PM
- Saturday OT (OPD Complex): 9 To 4 PM
The department contributes to clinical teaching and hands-on training of Postgraduate DNB students , junior and Senior residents posted in the hospital. Training focuses on basic surgical skills, emergency surgical management like exploratory laparotomies, appendectomies, debridement, incision and drainage etc. with medical management, ward work and clinical care and management of patients and operative exposure under supervision. DNB teaching classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday .
- DNB postgraduate students of department have successfully cleared NEETSS examinations and are presently pursuing MCh. Courses in Urology, oncosurgery in reputed institutes at all India level like SMS JAIPUR,KGMC,IPGMER etc.
- Some of our post graduate pass out candidates are also pursuing senior residency in AIIMS ( DELHI ) in Plastic surgery and urology.
- Our DNB postgraduate 2nd year student presented a clinical case on testicular swelling in SCOPE 2025.
- One of our DNB student Dr Dharani managed to win first prize in ASI surgical quiz at state level and participated at national level in2024.
The department has played a significant role in providing accessible surgical care to the community. Expansion of operation theatre facilities and sustained delivery of emergency surgical services stand as important achievements in strengthening public healthcare in East Delhi.
